Pilger also interviews presidential candidate General Wesley Clark, and former intelligence officers, all the while raising searching questions about the real motives for the 'war on terror'. While President Bush refers to the US attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq as two 'great victories', Pilger asks the question - victories over whom, and for what purpose? Pilger describes Afghanistan as a country "more devastated than anything I have seen since Pol Pot's Cambodia". He finds that Al-Qaida has not been defeated and that the Taliban is re-emerging. And of the "victory" in Iraq, he asks: "Is this Bush's Vietnam?"

Jason Beghe Turns On Scientology

Jason Beghe was best man at the wedding of "X-Files" star David Duchovny (his childhood pal) and actress Tea Leoni. In 1998, he starred as Demi Moore’s love interest in "G.I. Jane." He’s been featured in numerous TV dramas such as "Criminal Minds," "Numb3rs" and "CSI."

In 2005, Beghe appeared in promotional spots for the Church of Scientology. But now, Beghe has escaped the church after taking courses since 1994. He’s made a video;

You can see from the video that Beghe does not mince words. But his refreshing candor about the religion he joined in 1994 should shake the Celebrity Center to its core.

"It ain’t deliverin’ what it’s promised. It sure has not."

The video is billed as a three-minute teaser to a longer interview with Beghe that’s on its way. But the short video packs a powerful punch. Beghe still uses a lot of Scientology lingo like "OT" and "clear." Still, it’s quite easy to understand the point he’s making. After 14 years and a tremendous amount of money, he’s seeing Scientology in a different light.

Beghe has completed so many courses that he’s considered a top Scientologist, or "OT 5" — similar to Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Kirstie Alley. But Beghe reveals: "The further up the bridge, the worse you get."

He adds: "I don’t have an agenda. I’m just trying to help. I have the luxury of having gotten into Scientology and after having been in it, been out. And that’s a perspective that people who are still in and not out do not have."

*Criminon: Scientology front group that tries to recruit through the prisons.

* SP: Suppressive Person. Anyone that doesn't like Scientology and/or criticizes Scientology.

From what I can tell between 5000 and 10000 protesters turned out worldwide.

Quite a few TV news reports made mention of the protests, but in general it appears mainstream media interest is low.

Anonymous are orchestrating a second event on 15th March 2008. It will be interesting to see what sort of turnout that attracts. It might be Anonymous' biggest test... keeping the attention of the "ADD Generation" who appear to form a large percentage of their "troops" so far.

Is this a conspiracy? Anonymous would have us believe that the upper "management" of the church, and in particular it's current leader David Miscavige, conspired to take over the church, alter "source" texts and generally use it for their own evil games and ends. That the church actively breaks up marriages and demands members "disconnect" from any family or friends deemed to be "Suppressive". (allegedly more then 2500 people)

There is allegations of brainwashing, systematic mental and physical abuse on both adults and children, people needlessly dieing whilst in the care of Scientology practitioners, that the whole organisation is an elaborate MLM scam and so on.

I kind of 'get' how people dabble with the basic lower levels of Scientology to some extent.. as that appears to be a fairly legitimate attempt at a self help program from what I have read, but too many reports such as David Miscavige's cruel game of Musical Chairs played out in 2005 with some of his most senior and loyal staff (at the time), leave me thinking the upper levels of the church are in a very bad way.

I've learned enough to hope that some sort of policy change or investigation or coup occurs in the management of Scientology already, but will reseve my final opinion until more facts are known.

This program is an hour long, and features interviews with a series of people who believe that NASA faked the Apollo Moon landings in the 1960s and 1970s. The biggest voice in this is Bill Kaysing, who claims to have all sorts of hoax evidence, including pictures taken by the astronauts, engineering details, discussions of physics and even some testimony by astronauts themselves.

The program's conclusion was that the whole thing was faked in the Nevada desert (Area 51). According to them, NASA did not have the technical capability of going to the Moon, but pressure due to the Cold War with the Soviet Union forced them to fake it.

In this compelling docudrama by Michael Winterbottom and Mat Whitecross, the 'Tipton Three' narrate their own experiences in America's controversial offshore detention camp The Road To Guantanamo opens with archive footage of George W Bush, flanked by a stern-faced Tony Blair, declaring his certain knowledge that all the detainees held in Guantanamo are "bad people". Everything that follows is designed to turn these words inside out, as three young British Muslims tell the story of how they came to be in US custody at Guantanamo for over two years, and discuss the Kafkaesque horrors that awaited them there, until finally they were released without charge or apology.

The title may evoke the Bing Crosby and Bob Hope 'Road' movies of the 1940s, travel-themed musical comedies with a vaguely racist depiction of non-Americans, but the exotic journey embarked upon by the so-called 'Tipton Three' was to take them into areas that were politically incorrect in an altogether different way.

It would be easy to criticise The Road to Guantanamo for being one-sided (it is), and for failing to contextualise the conduct of the US (there is not even a passing mention of 9/11), but such objections miss the point. Many times Bush, Blair and other politicians have used their considerable public platforms to present a similarly partisan, at times even subsequently discredited justification for different aspects of their 'War on Terror', including the unlimited detention without trial of men like the Tipton Three. The trio, and the more than 800 prisoners who remain at America's Cuban base, were not able to communicate their version of events to a lawyer or judge, let alone to the outside world. The Road To Guantanamo gives them their day in court, and the story these "bad people" tell is one that well deserves a hearing.

Austin - The Academy Awards may give Texas' most famous cult something its members never achieved: mainstream credibility.

Among the nominees Monday night for best documentary is Waco: The Rules of Engagement, a 136 minute-long film that re-examines the events during the 51 day siege and tragedy at the Branch Davidian compound just outside Waco.

The awards ceremony comes about a month shy of the fifth anniversary of one of the most controversial domestic police operations in the nation's history. Whatever the outcome, it likely will refocus attention, at least briefly, on the April 19, 1993, inferno that claimed more than 80 lives including 25 children.

Conspiracy theories about the government's role in the Davidian debacle are not new. They began wafting across the Central Plains shortly after the February 28, 1993, raid by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms that led to the siege and eventual inferno.

And as the charred remains still lay in the smoldering ruins of their home, critics were alleging that the FBI had fired on the group, started the blaze and intentionally blocked avenues of escape.

At the time, however, most of these conspiracy theorists were perceived as fringe elements or individuals who had long aligned themselves with anti-government groups.

But Dan Gifford, Producer of Waco: The Rules of Engagement is a former journalist with ABC News, the MacNeil/Lehrer News Hour and CNN. He recently told the Albuquerque Journal that the film "really does prove that mass murder by one's own government in this country is very possible, as long as the victims are properly vilified and dehumanized
ahead of time."

The work's nomination for the film industry's top documentary award may signal that distrust of the federal government is now firmly rooted in middle America.

To at least one former FBI agent who played a very public if not key role during the siege, the critical praise carries no weight.

"I see nothing there that stands out as a quality production other than an anti-government bias that perhaps could lead to another Oklahoma City (bombing)" said former FBI agent Bob Ricks, who helped conduct daily press briefings on what the government and Davidians allegedly were saying and doing during the raid.

"If that's their goal, then perhaps they were successful there by putting out a total piece of propaganda."

Now commissioner of public safety in Oklahoma, Ricks said the anti-government bias may be just the edge the film needs to win an Oscar. "That's just unfortunately the nature of the arts crowd," Ricks said. "They tend not to be very supportive of the FBI, and if they come up with something negative regarding the government then they certainly would be more leaning toward that."

He has seen the film and doesn't think very highly of it. "Totally biased, one-sided and without factual basis," he said in a phone interview. "Obviously they went in with preconceived ideas and found people who are willing to say anything for sums of money to try and reinforce those preconceived ideas."

He cited in particular the comments of Edward Allard, a specialist in infra red surveillance photography. Allard reviewed the FBI produced videos taken by helicopters from overhead during the FBI's tank-and-tear-gas attack on the cult's headquarters and interpreted the repeated flashes of white light as machine-gun fire directed at the building by government agents.

Allard's analysis, Ricks said, "is absolutely laughable, because it wasn't occurring." "That's absolutely bogus and a hoax and they know it" he added.

In the chorus of those praising the film is Houston Chronicle critic Louis B. Parks, who called it "convincing" and "highly disturbing." The film, he said, "is as powerfully explosive and as compulsively watchable as the event it covers."

"It is essential to emphasize that this is no rabid, cheaply done, right-wing cant or diatribe," Parks wrote in his review. "Director William Gazecki's film is professional, sober and reflective, using government investigation footage, experts from a variety of fields, eyewitness reports, on-the-spot news coverage and the video taken inside the headquarters by (cult leader David) Koresh's followers."

Another critic concluded the film convinces that "the Davidians did not kill themselves; they were murdered by the FBI."

Ricks, though, still toes the official FBI line: the situation inside the cult compound was very volatile and deteriorating and the government had to do something to disrupt Koresh's hold over his followers. Without government intervention, he maintained then and now, Koresh either would have massacred his followers or led them to mass suicide.

"After 51 day, everyone understood...that things were getting worse," he said. "All the psychologists that were working for us said (Koresh) was ready to explode and it was going to be on his terms and conditions unless we did something to disrupt that. And what we did was about the most minimal use of force we could, which is used every day somewhere in the United States, and that's using tear gas."

"In the final analysis, instead of letting people escape his control, he assassinated most of them in there."

Waco: The Big Lie

In 1995 Linda Thompson, American attorney, filmmaker, and founder of the American Justice Federation, made this film titled Waco: The Big Lie, which contained footage of the siege of the Branch Davidian church in Waco, Texas. The film was distributed widely on videotape and for a short period after its release she was a regular guest on talk radio shows, especially those of Art Bell and Chuck Harder. The film challenged the mainstream news reports of the Branch Davidian siege and created a small sensation, alleging a government coverup of the events surrounding the siege.

Some of her movie's allegations have since been vindicated by professionally produced films such as Waco: The Rules of Engagement and Waco: A New Revelation, but the film's most controversial aspects have not. Specifically, Linda Thompson showed a split second of footage of a tank with what appeared to be fire emitting from it into Mt. Carmel and she claimed it was a flamethrower used to start the fire that consumed the church. When the full footage was acquired by Michael McNulty, the "fire" was shown to be sunlight reflecting off sheetrock insulation on a wall panel that had fallen on the tank. Adding a sense of surety to her flamethrower claim, Thompson claimed that the tank backed out twice and each time the flame was clearly visible, but in fact she just ran the same split-second clip twice.

Thompson also claimed that three BATF agents killed by friendly fire during the siege were all former bodyguards of then-President Bill Clinton and the friendly fire was actually an assassination ordered by Clinton. Her film was also heavily criticized for allegedly showing footage of the siege out of chronological order while Thompson's narration declared that the order shown in her video was the actual order of the events that took place.

She followed up her first film with another, Waco II: The Big Lie Continues, in which she offered rebuttals to those who were critical of her first film, declared everyone critical of the film to be part of a cover-up, and continued to stand by the most controversial allegations in Waco: The Big Lie.

Zeitgeist presents a theory on what Christianity, 9/11 and The Federal Reserve have in common.

The video is currently enjoying some acclaim around the web and is an interesting watch (despite the 2 hour length). Although it rehashes many bits and pieces from previous conspiracy videos, I think the main reason this film will enjoy popular success is the clever way the makers manage to cover a vast amount of material and "facts" in a simplistic way that doesnt confuse the viewer along the way.

I had a search around for some references debunking the movie or critically analysing it... but the best I could come up with was a discussion on the James Randi Sceptics forum. Anyway, at least it is one alternative point of view: http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?t=85264

Flight 77:

There is no evidence of Flight 77 or the dead passengers at the Pentagon. The Pentagon security video suggests a Global Hawk was shattered by a missile. The missile may have been launched from a defensive missile system around the Pentagon.

The World Trade Center Towers:

Explosives were placed in both towers before the attack to cause the towers to disintegrate into dust. Explosives were detonated via radio by a computer in Building 7.

Building 7:

It was a 47 story, steel-framed building that disintegrated later in the day, also from explosives. The 23rd floor was the Mayor's "Emergency Command Center," which had its own air supply. This appears to be the command center for destroying the towers.

Plus, an explanation of turbofans, explosives, the Oklahoma City bombing, the media that Americans mistakenly refer to as our "Free Press," and why deception is the main weapon in this war to control us.
